I worked too hard for you to deny me working so hard. I wanted to try and look like a sculpture, like Leonidas deserved to look. I wanted to be big, and cut. I think that movie worked on so many levels, and people appreciated it for more than the abs; it's about team spirit, sacrifice and honour.

I was aiming for the stars. I wanted to look superhuman, like nobody had ever looked before. Then I'd look down at me and think this doesn't look real. I'm pretty much happy to walk around naked any chance I get, because I know as soon as this movie finishes it'll all disappear again, so I might as well enjoy being seen while I have it. I kept that up for months and months. It was a way to get into my mind that I deserved to lead and to feel it was in their minds too, that I was an actor who'd impressed them by the work I was willing to do.

I knew I had to wear this big beard and this big helmet and I didn't want to be this big head on this skinny body. You see so many movies like this where this English actor comes out with his twiggy arms and this very cerebral, academic English voice, shouting at these armies.

I never bought that for a second. I wanted to look super-human, like nobody else had ever looked before. I tried to make it as extreme as possible, just like a Spartan. I think it's pretty impossible to surpass, at least in my book, I wouldn't want to do it again and I don't think I''d ever really need to do it again.

The darker you get, the more your muscles show. They're still your muscles but we'd spray them to enhance them. We'd still work hard. By the end of the movie, I was cut so much that I could stick my fingers into the ripples of my abs. I would flash everyone with my six-pack--it was an eight-pack, actually. I was like, "check this out," because you are never going to see this again. I've seen so many actors play these kinds of roles, and you see all this equipment on either a big belly or skinny little arms.

You know that every bead of sweat falling off your head, every weight you've pumped -- the history of that is all in your eyes. That was a great thing, to put on that cape and put on that helmet, and not have to think, Shit, I should have trained more.

Instead, I was standing there feeling like a lion. Horn and the stuntmen with his physical preparation on ]: I made a promise to [Warner Bros. Horn personally that if he gave me the role, I would so kick butt that I would make the movie my life -- and I did. Every workout session, and every bit of pain that I went through made me feel more like a Spartan.

I wanted the stuntmen to go, "Who is this guy? He's fucking nuts. Look at that. The more naked you were the stronger you felt because you could shock your opponents. The Spartans were big and strong and wanted people to see that. They wanted their opponents to wonder 'Do we want to mess with him? When I was training, my six-pack was so pronounced that I could stick up to my second knuckle of my finger into my stomach, defining my six-pack.

I was truly buff and God-like. Actually, that question annoys me because I am still suffering from the aches and pains of the work that I put in for that movie because I over-trained ridiculously. I had my own body-building trainer and then I trained with the film crew and then I would pump on set all the time and then people come with stuff like "Oh you wore a body suit?

It was all very much me! My abs in the movie are mine own. It is very expensive to CGI in somebody's abs for a second, never mind for a whole film. That's a 5 million dollar deal for just one person!

Warner Brothers were excited for me to do this film, but they weren't 5 million dollars excited, to CGI in my abs. I shed blood, sweat and tears for that six-pack.

But inside I feel like an year-old man. My knees are gone. My shoulders feel like they don't exist any more. You look at Leonidas' arms and you look at his legs, and they'd break you like a fucking toothpick. I was their king, so I wanted the other actors to be going, "Wow, he's fucking awesome". We are talking about a mythical warrior-king, so that was a different experience.

I wanted to get into a different type of physicality, not as big [as King Leonidas]. But more sinewy with the feeling that inside, you are just so strong in every moment and very tough.

And that's Cable [the name of the character he was playing], that's the kind of life he's lived. He has that sinewy muscular look where you see all the veins popping out. Once the veins starting coming out, you know you are getting somewhere [training wise]. And you get that from just pumping constantly and then you get all cut and shredded.

I was inspired for that scene by De Niro in Taxi Driver , the scene where he is doing the push-ups. And you go wow! You just take one look and it just says so much about that guy. Often when you see psychos and when you imagine them, you can see those muscles and them being all sinewy and that looks quite terrifying and it suggests a lot, how much extra work has been put into it.

So it was a time for me to get really cut. One of the advantages of that scene was it meant that I had to train. And that's one of the best ways for me to try and get my body in shape. It was just a couple of scenes of political conversation, and that's not the way I wanted him to be remembered.

I wished them the best, but it always felt like a tenuous link trying to pull me into that movie. I didn't really belong in there.

It's crazy for them to expect that I would spend one year training non-stop to get that eight-pack Leonidas body back for a minute-long cameo appearance. But it's not about one [isolated] training session. It's about visualizing your taut body on screen after many such mindless training sessions.

The regimen was incredibly difficult because I went through a lot of training for it. And for The Ugly Truth , I didn't have to worry about it much. So I had the luxury of saying that [I would never sport six-pack abs again]. But then another movie comes along, and it's happened a few times. For Olympus Has Fallen , I had to get the abs back again. And then you swear that's it! And then vanity gets the better of you. Though Phantom did not hit blockbuster gold, it got Butler recognized in Hollywood, and four years later he landed the lead role, as King Leonidas, in , the testosterone-infused historical epic about a small legion of Spartan soldiers defeating the enormous Persian army.

To look believable as a warrior king, Butler trained every day for four months in the most intense workout regimen of his life, giving him an incredible physique in time for the shoot: "You know that every bead of sweat falling off your head, every weight you've pumped—the history of that is all in your eyes," he said. Butler's role in was a huge boost to his career profile. Since appearing in , the actor has starred in several romantic comedies such as P.

And his career isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Despite all of his success, Gerard Butler still retains the breezy attitude of a guy who rolls with the punches and has a down-to-earth sense of humor. Looking back, he is still slightly stunned at the twists his life has taken and reflects on what could have been: "I wasn't going to be an actor.

I was going to be a lawyer There was something else at work, something I didn't have control of. If I hadn't [messed] up that job, I wouldn't be sitting here right now. I might be a very mediocre lawyer in some small town in the middle of Scotland. We strive for accuracy and fairness. If you see something that doesn't look right, contact us!
